1. Sign up for a timeslot. The Vocal Team Coordinator or the director will have the sign-up sheet available to you in mid - late June. You must sign up in person. No phone calls or emails will be accepted. When you sign up you will be given a questionnaire. (Or download the questionnaire here.)

2. Complete the questionnaire. Bring it with you to the audition. You will be asked to discuss your answers to the questions.

3. Prepare your audition song. You will be asked to sing a song of your choice. Please choose a song that you believe highlights your abilities and talents. It needs to be memorized. Things to consider are: vocal range, musical style and rhythmic difficulty. You will want to be able to sing it with confidence so don’t choose something extremely daring. You may use an accompaniment track (CD only). Or, you may also use a pre-arranged, pre-rehearsed piano accompaniment. One of our church pianists would probably be more than willing to play for you. Please note that it will be up to you to make the arrangements for rehearsal and to ask them to come to the audition.

4. Show up early & ready to audition. Please don’t be late. We will be on a tight schedule. Being late or not showing up for your audition will be a huge determining factor if you make the team or not.
This is how I am anticipating that the audition will go:
a. We will chit-chat for a couple of minutes – ease your nerves. (or increase your nerves!)
b. We will discuss your answers to the questionnaire. I will be looking for your understanding of the concepts of worship leadership.
c. You will sing the song that you have prepared. I am expecting you to use a handheld microphone that will amplify your voice over the speaker system in the worship center. I will be listening for your vocal abilities (tone, use of vibrato, ability to sing in the middle of the pitch, enunciation, etc.). I will be looking for your ability to communicate the focus of the song (emotions, facial expressions, body language, etc.) and, if appropriate to the song, your ability to freely worship as you sing.
d. I will then have you sight sing the melody line of a familiar hymn. Then, I will expect you to try to sing the harmony line (alto or tenor) as written in the hymnal. (Yes, you can look at the hymnal) You will also be able to listen to it once on the piano prior to singing it. If you are a soprano you will still be required to attempt the alto line. I have made arrangements for another vocalist to be present to sing the melody line with you.

5. Wait patiently for the results. I will make the final decision the day after the auditions are completed. You will be contacted either way. If you want, I will be happy to give you an honest critique of your audition. I will expect you to ask me though. I will not mention anything unless you want to hear it. This brings up a good point… not everyone is going to make the team. There are only 10 available positions. If you are at a place in your life where the committment will be too hard to handle, then you might want to consider holding off until you can fully commit to the expectations.
